Knights of St Joseph of Arimathea and Dames of St Mary Magdalene
"Two traditions meet in Avalon, the ancient faith of the Britons and the creed of Christ" Dion Fortune
This first grade honours the memory of the Knights Templar and incorporates several elements from old Templar rituals in our initiations. We are also inspired by the traditional Templar ideals of chivalry, honour, integrity, humility, courtesy, wisdom & charity and endeavour to live by these principles in our daily lives.
We describe the spirituality of our initiatic orders as Avalonian as we are inspired by the tale of St Joseph of Arimathea's foundation of the first church in Britain on the Isle of Avalon, otherwise known as Glastonbury.
Glastonbury is a place where three paths converge, the old path of the Druid on the Tor (represented by our Trinity Grove) the path of the Knightly Quest for the Holy Grail at Chalice Well (represented by our first grade, KSJA/DSMM) and the path of the monk and the Crusader spirit (represented by our Celtic Knights and Dames Templar & Knights Templar Priests). On the inner planes and in the "Avalon of the Heart" we work to bring together these three strands of Avalonian spirituality, which when held in balance and woven together make a magical path around our Celtic Jerusalem, "the holiest earth in England”. Further information on the Avalonian tradition may be read here.
For Knights KSJA and Dames DSMM the work is primarily devoted to personal study of the Avalonian tradition of spirituality. We seek to deepen our spirituality through meditation and ritual practice, both alone and, when circumstances allow, in common. We currently have over seventy members throughout the world. All who are respectful of Christian belief and practice, as they understand it, are welcome. We also welcome suitable applicants for ordination.
For both men and women the regalia of the order is a simple white mantle bearing a violet Maltese cross on the breast. For clerics this may be worn over the alb but for lay Knights and Dames, black trousers and skirts with white shirts or blouses are appropriate. Knights may use the post-nominal letters KSJA and Dames, DSMM.
Having completed the first grade some members may wish to continuing exploration of the Graal and Templar mysteries in subsequent grades and side orders. Further dedication within the Avalonian tradition may be made through the the Guild of the Holy Thorn, whilst Christo-Pagan members may be interested in Avalonian Druidcraft, a side degree of Trinity Grove, an Esoteric Druid Order.

Knights and Dames Prayer
0 Lord Jesus Christ whose glorious Mother was honoured for so many centuries under the title of Our Lady Saint Mary of Glastonbury, grant that through her intercession together with that of St Joseph of Arimathea and St Mary Magdalene we may be faithful and true Knights and Dames, continually growing in love and knowledge of Thee and so give Thee worthy service. Amen.
